Seminar: XEODISEA CÍES: UNHA NOVA MIRADA

Last May 13, I attended a very interesting seminar on the geological singularities of the Cies Islands. Several renowned scientists explained various aspects of the islands’ geology in the context of their candidacy for UNESCO global geopark status.

It was exciting and for me, a biologist with limited knowledge of geology, it has been very useful. I have learned much about textures, foliation, deaclasses, fault planes, etc. Did you know that the islands are made up of two types of granite: homogeneous and heterogeneous? And that the cliffs are cut in sharp shape because the base rock has very straight and marked laminations? They also told us about the mysterious “rego”.

I keep two fundamental ideas:
1) The Cíes do not have exceptional geology, but they are an exceptional study area to study geological processes (Óscar Pazos, geologist)
2) Geology is not about forms, it is about processes. But to study the processes we must look for forms.

Without a doubt a very profitable day 🙂
